Morphling is a ranged agility hero that has many flexible abilities, item builds and is leveled as a very strong hard carry. He relies strongly on his attributes, and is an effective ganker. Unlike other agility carries that rely on physical attacks, he relies on his powerful abilities to initiate and shift into a state from which he can make a kill. Waveform lets him surge directly forward to a location, damaging enemies on his path, working both as a nuke or an escape. Adaptive Strike is an interesting scaling ability that blasts enemies with magical water while also stunning, knocking back, and dealing damage. Its power is based on either Agility or Strength. Morph allows him to edit his physical being, switching it from Agility or Strength, transforming him into a strong damage dealer or a tank. His ultimate, Replicate, creates a copy of either an ally or an enemy. At will, he can take on the place of that Replicate and instantly surprise enemies.

Lore: For dark eons the comet circled. Held in thrall to a distant sun, bound by gravity’s inexorable pull, the massive ball of ice careened through the blackness between worlds, made strange by its dark journey. On the eve of the ancient war of the Vloy, it punched down through the sky and lit a glowing trail across the night, a sign both armies took for an omen. The frozen ball melted in a flash of boiling heat, as below two forces enjoined in battle across the border of a narrow river. Thus freed from its icy stasis, the Morphling was born into conflict, an elemental power at one with the tides of the ocean, capricious and unconstrained. He entered the fight, instinctively taking the form of the first general who dared set foot across the water, and then struck him dead. As the motley warriors clashed, he shifted from form to form throughout the battle, instantly absorbing the ways of these strange creatures--now a footsoldier, now an archer, now the cavalryman--until, by the time the last soldier fell, Morphling had played every part. The battle's end was his beginning.

  • Morphling is invulnerable, and his model cannot be selected with the mouse during Waveform.
    • However, Morphling can be selected by clicking the hero icon with the mouse.
  • Can hit units up to 1200 (Talent 1600) distance away (travel distance + radius).
  • Morphling can turn, attack, cast abilities and use items during Waveform.

  • The projectile travels at a speed of 1150 and can be disjointed.
  • The multiplier and stun values are not fixed. They adapt linearly in smooth intervals depending on the difference between Morphling's agility and strength.
  • The values change with each percent difference between agility and strength, even when it is just a minimal change.
  • The multiplier and stun values also count bonus attributes, not only base attributes.
  • When the current agility is 50% higher than the strength, the damage multiplier stops increasing and the stun duration stops decreasing.
  • When the current strength is 50% higher than the agility, the damage multiplier stops decreasing and the stun duration stops increasing.
  • The knock back uses the same rules as the stun, it stops decreasing when agility is 50% higher than strength, and stops increasing when strength is 50% higher.
  • Knock back distance ranges from 100 to 300 units, knock back speed is 1000.
  • Checks Morphling's stats upon projectile impact.
  • Targeted neutral creeps do not draw aggro from lane creeps and towers and are ignored by auto-attacks and attack-move orders for 6 seconds.

  • Morph (Agility Gain) and Morph (Strength Gain) are linked abilities; leveling up one automatically levels up the other as well.
  • Morph does not interrupt Morphling's channeling spells upon toggling.
  • Morph cannot be shift-queued, and unlike any other toggle spell in the game, can be toggled during the cast time of other spells.
  • Converts 2/4/8/16 attribute points per second, resulting in the following changes per second:
    • Agility: Morphling gains/loses 0.29/0.57/1.14/2.29 armor, 2/4/8/16 attack speed and 2/4/8/16 attack damage.
    • Strength: Morphling gains/loses 40/80/160/320 maximum health and 0.12/0.24/0.48/0.96 health regeneration
    • Gaining or losing strength through Morph increases/reduces current health by 20 per point as well, instead of only maximum health.
    • This means he effectively gets healed when morphing strength, or his health drained when morphing agility. The health loss is not lethal.
    • Drains 60/120/240/480 mana on every shift, resulting in 30 mana per second.
  • Morph continues to convert attributes even if Morphling is disabled.
  • Can only convert Morphling's base agility and strength. Bonus attributes cannot be converted.
    • The passively added strength and agility are not added to the base attributes, and can therefore not be converted either.
  • Morphed attributes are permanent and not reverted on death.
  • The passive strength effectively increases Morphling's health by 60/80/100/120 and health regeneration by 0.18/0.24/0.3/0.36.

Staring into Morphling produces a reflection that mimics the beholder.

  • Replicate cannot be cast on the caster themselves or any illusions under their control.
    • However, any illusion under allied or enemy control can be targeted, including illusions of Morphling under their control.
  • When the illusion is created, this ability is temporarily replaced by Morph Replicate icon.png Morph Replicate until the illusion disappears.
  • Both, the illusion and Morphling have a timer above them, showing how many seconds are left for the illusion to expire. This timer is only visible to Morphling.
  • When replicating an ally, the illusion carries the ally's name, instead of Morphling's, so enemies cannot tell if it is just a replicate, or the real hero.
  • The illusion spawns 108 range away from the target if the hero has a collision size of 24, and 72 if the collision size is 8. It appears either north, east, south or west from the target.
  • Faceless Void minimap icon.png Faceless Void replicates are able to walk inside any Chronosphere icon.png Chronosphere. A replicate created from an allied Faceless Void is even granted the phased movement and haste inside it.

  • The Hybrid illusion can use any ability of its source, except for ultimates and abilities granted by Aghanim's Scepter.
  • The abilities follow the same rules as Rubick's Spell Steal icon.png Spell Steal. The rules can be viewed here.
  • It cannot level up any abilities. Their levels are equal to what the original hero had them on as the Hybrid was created.
  • The Hybrid can fully use any passive ability of the hero, if they can affect illusions. This includes passive ultimates.
  • If a buff gets carried over to illusions upon creation (like most transformation spells), the Hybrid illusion gets it as well. This includes buffs from ultimates.
  • If the targeted ally has Aghanim's Scepter, the Hybrid gets its spells upgraded as well.
  • The illusion's attributes mirror Morphling's base attributes. They are set upon cast and do not adapt dynamically. Attributes gained from Morphling's items do not affect the illusion.
  • The illusion spawns 108 range away from the target if the hero has a collision size of 24, and 72 if the collision size is 8. It appears either north, east, south or west from the target.
  • The illusion has a timer above it, showing how many seconds are left for the illusion to expire. This timer is only visible to Morphling.

Recommended items

Starting items:

  • Tango icon.png Tango should always be picked up to give you sustain. If heading mid consider asking the supports to pool you tangoes.
  • Iron Branch icon.png Iron Branch and Circlet icon.png Circlet give cost efficient attributes and can be built into a Magic Wand icon.png Magic Wand.
  • Ring of Protection icon.png Ring of Protection improves Morphling's rather low starting armor, and can make an early Ring of Basilius (Active) icon.png Ring of Basilius for more damage and mana regeneration.
  • Wraith Band icon.png Wraith Band should be considered if going mid rather than safe lane.

Early-game items:

  • Bottle (Full) icon.png Bottle should be the first item purchased if Morphling is running mid, as every rune can be used to effectively speed his farm, and can later be used in combination with Boots of Travel 1 icon.png Boots of Travel to quickly refill mana and health.
  • Boots of Speed icon.png Boots of Speed are necessary on Morphling to improve his slow 285 base movement speed.
  • Infused Raindrop icon.png Infused Raindrops are a valuable source of mana regen, and provide a strong source of protection against magical nukes.

Core items:

  • Ring of Aquila (Active) icon.png Ring of Aquila provides Damage, Mana regeneration and Armor, all of which Morphling needs.
  • Power Treads icon.png Power Treads are a great addition to Morphling's build as they provide an affordable source of attributes. The cost of his spells can be mitigated by casting on Intelligence, and they can also provide Agility or Strength for more offensive or defensive power without needing to use Morph.
  • Linken's Sphere icon.png Linken's Sphere is a common early item for Morphling, providing a modest amount of attributes and regeneration, as well as giving protection against point-target spells, making it even harder for him to be successfully ganked during farming.
  • Ethereal Blade icon.png Ethereal Blade is a very interesting pickup on Morphling, and he is the strongest user of the item in the game. Often referred to as "Shotgun Morphling", Ethereal Blade allows you to very quickly deal a very large amount of magic damage to a single target by using the E-Blade active, Adaptive Strike, and Waveform in quick succession while morphed to high agility.
    • Ethereal blade provides a large amount of agility and greatly amplifies magical damage to a target, and Morphling is unique in having a magical nuke that scales up with agility. This item allows Morphling to roam and pick off all but the most durable of heroes, if purchased early enough. This is best gotten as the first or second major item on Morphling, as its effectiveness falls off once enemy heroes tank up, get BKBs, or start to group up.
    • If you feel this item has outlived its usefulness, consider disassembling it to make a Butterfly. Keep in mind it scales really well with Morphling and can still output loads of damage late game. Considering Morphling's normally short-ranged attacks, even in the late game the Ethereal Blade and Adaptive strike can effectively kill an enemy support at the start of a fight.

Situational items:

  • Dragon Lance icon.png Dragon Lance is a cheap source of attributes, and gives valuable attack range to improve Morphling's early fights. Later, it may be upgraded to Hurricane Pike icon.png Hurricane Pike for additional mobility, mana, and regen, or it can be disassembled to make Black King Bar icon.png Black King Bar and/or Yasha icon.png Yasha.
  • Boots of Travel 1 icon.png Boots of Travel are a strong alternative to Power Treads, as between the teleports of the item and Replicate, Morphling gains the ability to quickly move about the map, using the fountain to easily regenerate and quickly pushing multiple lanes for quick farming.
  • Black King Bar icon.png Black King Bar is a vital item for late-game teamfights, providing Morphling with time to deal his damage without being disabled.
  • Eye of Skadi icon.png Eye of Skadi is the largest source of total attributes available in one item, providing a large amount of HP even when fully morphed to Agility.
  • Butterfly icon.png Butterfly gives a very large amount of attack damage and evasion, and so is most effective for a build focused on attacks instead of Adaptive Strike.
  • Satanic icon.png Satanic allows Morphling to use his high DPS to rapidly heal himself full, via the active. However, if you get stunned while trying to lifesteal, you can still be very easily killed, so it should be paired with Black King Bar icon.png Black King Bar or used against teams with little lockdown potential.
  • Manta Style icon.png Manta Style gives ability to purge silences and debuffs and synergizes well with his escape mechanisms.
  • Diffusal Blade 1 icon.png Diffusal Blade provides modest attributes, and allows his attacks to burn mana. It can be an effective item to increase Morphling's damage output in situations where he has a large amount of strength, and after a stunning adaptive strike, one can burn enough mana to prevent the enemy from responding with their own spells.
  • Aether Lens icon.png Aether Lens provides much of what a supporting Morphling needs to be effective. More mana and mana regeneration, and amplifying the cast range and damage of his spells.
  • Aghanim's Scepter icon.png Aghanim's Scepter is rarely worth the valuable item slot for a carry Morphling. On a support Morphling, with an appropriately strong ally, this can effectively make late teamfights 6v5. Of particular value is allies who have a passive ultimate ability, and allies who can summon powerful wards.

  • In DotA, Morphling was the only hero without a hero name, being named "Morphling the Morphling".
  • The attack response Play "Wave of mutilation!" is a direct reference to a Pixies song of the same name.
