Wu "2009" Sheng is a retired Chinese professional DotA player currently managing team WE. He is famous for being the first Chinese professional DotA player to appear in the mainstream media through an interview by Phoenix Television.[1]

Gaming Career[]

Early years and AVNC[]

In September 2005, 2009 entered the Zhejiang University and became its college DotA team AVNC's captain in 2007. They surprised the scene by beating the highly favored HTML team in World Cyber Games China 2007 before losing to eventual champions GL.[2]

EHOME[]

With reference from GK and LongDD, 2009 joined EHOME in 2008, forming a formidable team in the Chinese DotA scene. This was followed with great performances in PGL in May, GOA in June, CIG, WCG China and G-League in July, winning them all. In August 2008, a truly inspiring performance from 2009 in the ACG 2007 Grand Finals in Singapore won them the competition.

Ks.int[]

After the ACG, 2009 left EHOME and was requested to play for Ks.int for MGC 2008.[3] 2009 teamed up with European players such as Puppey to grab a 3rd in MGC[4] before continuing his pursue in studies.[5]

FTD[]

In July 2009, 2009 won the SGamer solo championship[6], typing the text "I am going to win this competition. Sorry" to his opponent in the finals after he killed his courier. However, this incident is widely misreported, as it was actually LongDD who started a private chat before the chat went to public channel. So 2009 indeed intended to kill the courier but he did not deliberately chatted to distract LongDD. On the contrary, it was LongDD who started the incident on his own.[7] August 2009, the team FTD was formed by 2009 and was a dark horse in IEM 2009, winning the championship over the then unbeatable cD. FTD won the sponsorship of sGty before the 2009 SMM. At SMM, they fought a grueling battle with Kingsurf in the losers bracket, which involved his teammate, ZSMJ, losing a Sacred Relic (sniped by an invisible Beastmaster and his teammates who were waiting for the moment) in the game before the 2009-led team made arguably the biggest comeback in the history of DotA.[8] They finished their Cinderella run by defeating cD in the grand finals. In PCGL, internal problems struck FTD and they could only bring home a silver.

LGD[]

At the end of 2009, FTD won the sponsorship of food company LGD, and thus renamed to LGD. With the leaving of several players, LGD fell into a dark period due to adaptation problems. However, in April 2010, LGD was unbeatable, winning all games in competitions and beating top Chinese teams left and right. They placed 2nd in WCG China 2010 and won numerous competitions. In August 2010, internal problems within LGD after the National eSports Open has led to 2009's retirement as a DotA player.

Managerial Career[]

LGD[]

2009 continued to stay in LGD as the team's manager, leading the team to SMM 2010 before a controversial departure after conflicts with the sponsor.

WE[]

In January 2011, WE appointed 2009 as their manager of the brand new WE DotA team, and his experience in the game has helped the young team to grow.

Personality[]

Although Wu Sheng might be a Dota legend, his personality has been under debate. He had various conflicts with people, including EHOME and LGD, possibly due to his taunting behavior and rash personality. However, some rumors about his misconducts were later proved untrue or misinterpreted.[9] He was also criticized as being deceiving in his business management.

Other Works[]

2009 is also a professional DotA commentator and runs his own Taobao store business. His instructive videos in his popular Youku channel have accumulated over 65 million views.[10] Besides, he has sponsored or cosponsored a few competitive video gaming events, including the University Cyber Games (UCG), promoting the advancement of eSports in China.[11]
