The reason for this is so that we can use the template for gems without creating separate pages for each one, since Inscribed Gems, Spectator Gems, Autograph Runes etc are all basically the same and it would be too tedious. :{{tlx|Single-hero cosmetic item nav/item}} can't do this. I'd prefer not to keep adding features to {{tlx|Single-hero cosmetic item nav/item}}, since it's used everywhere. I'd just make new templates. It sounds like a fairly specific set of needs. I've sketched out a framework below (view wikisource). In the actual template, say {{tlx|Spectator Gem}}, you'd want to replace "Spectator: Alliance" with <nowiki>{{{1|Spectator Gem}}}</nowiki> or somesuch, then call it with {{tlx|Spectator Gem|Spectator: Alliance}}. Make sense? Acceptable? --[[User:Kroocsiogsi|Kroocsiogsi]] ([[User talk:Kroocsiogsi|talk]]) 08:01, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Template:VoiceNav and Template:John_Patrick_Lowrie

VoiceNav should be an actual navigation, and it's current content in Template:VoiceNav/item.
Thanks. Fixed. --Kroocsiogsi
I also don't see the point of Template:John_Patrick_Lowrie - doing that for every voice actor is going to be laborious
Not at all. There aren't that many. I will create all the templates, and they are a cinch to maintain. --Kroocsiogsi
and I don't think there is much reason for it - all of that information can be easily contained in a page about John Patrick Lowrie - and it doesn't need to be on any other pages. -RJ 11:15, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Surely it's more elegant than what it replaces? --Kroocsiogsi 19:19, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Honestly, I don't like it... would prefer it being just a piece of trivia - we don't need everything in a template. I'd be curious to hear what other people think though, maybe I'm the only one who isn't a fan. :p -RJ 19:34, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
But a template makes it so much easier to maintain! Maybe there's a design change that'd change your mind? Remove the pictures to make it cleaner? --Kroocsiogsi
I think it all can be merged into one template. Will try when i wake up tomorrow. Redefining history 19:46, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's an interesting possibility. If I'm thinking of the same thing you are, one disadvantage would be that the title of the NavBox couldn't have an individual actor, so readers would need to expand the NavBox to find the single most important piece of information. -Kroocsiogsi
It can have different titles imo. Try title = Voiced by {{{1|}}} Redefining history 19:52, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
Try transferring all your content to Template:VoiceNav I created. Redefining history 20:14, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
OK, give me a minute. I'm almost done with the content. --Kroocsiogsi
Ah. We were not thinking along the same lines. Now I see what you're doing, but I fail to see the point. You're swapping out the entire content of the template depending on which voice actor is provided. Seems needlessly complex to me. -Kroocsiogsi
Imo that would be better, such that everything would be compressed into one template. Idk though. Redefining history 20:32, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

If you are going to ask RJ to run this User:Kroocsiogsi/RBotson, can you ask him to run it on every language? Thanks. Redefining history 08:43, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

Yeah I manually replaced all double-byte "cast" into single-byte ones. You can now ask RJ to run the bot on zh pages again. Redefining history 05:02, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Question about unreleased hero responses

If I may ask the question, how did you get Invoker's responses?

I saw Phantom Assassin's responses long ago, tried to find it in the game files, but didn't find neither PAs (who has responses listed) nor Bane (who not only has them listed, but also uploaded).

--Shalafi 22:59, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Phantom Assassin's responses are just taken from her subtitle files. Bane's audio was in game at one point, and has been removed since. Invoker, too, is just subtitles. -Lancey 23:09, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Check in Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota\resource. All the subtitle files are listed there, including Phantom Assassin, Bane, and Invoker. The sound files themselves are found inside the main VPK, under sound\vo. (Bane's responses have since been removed from this location; Invoker's and Phantom Assassin's responses have not yet appeared.) --Kroocsiogsi 00:28, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
Ahh, that's what I was suspecting. It was the only logical explanation for Bane having sound files and not the rest. Thank you for the answers. -Shalafi 18:41, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Responses

Does the wiki let old revisions be saved as a new version? It didn't seem to notice it and the edit page didn't say anything about it either. - J.P. 01:34, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

If I understand your question, it should warn you of an edit conflict and request that you manually merge your changes. I've seen it misfire once, so maybe it's a bug. --Kroocsiogsi 01:39, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
There weren't any warnings, like i said. - J.P. 01:42, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Right, that's why I said "maybe it's a bug". :-D --Kroocsiogsi 01:44, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback :)

Thanks for the feedback on my editing on the Juggernaut responses page. I had no idea someone was in charge of that area, or I would have asked before taking over the project as my own! Good to see you approve. And I'll definitely take on board your rules and suggestions with regard to the nonverbal sounds and unnecessary punctuation. Thanks again!

PS: Had no idea where to reply to your comments on my talk page, there or here. I'll try here and see what happens :P ~Cowbell 20:04, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

"Used in" and "Components"

Try to make those lines unclickable in the item pages if possible. Redefining history 05:39, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that's easy. I'll do it in a second. I'm trying to figure out the excess padding right now. --Kroocsiogsi 05:44, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Partially blocked by Linken's/Magic Immunity

I think that when an ability is partially blocked then more details should be put inside the notes in addition to the tooltip, since not everyone can be expected to know that mousing over the little BKB icon will reveal more information, whereas the notes are obviously right there in the open. Said note should be at the top of the note list as well, in my opinion. Since you were the only one to modify things in such a way so far I figured I'd swing that by you. --Pigbuster 18:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, good point. I'll revert my edits. --Kroocsiogsi 18:26, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Valve defined Roles/Items

I've took some time to read the chatlog today, and saw a discussion on this and here is my input.

While personally I disagree with some of Valve's roles/items, I also disagree on DP being a carry and the discussion would never end for which role would suit any particular hero best, that's why we leave it to Valve. For anyone who would want to express their own opinion on how to build on these heroes, we (will soon) have the guide section. Redefining history 09:19, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

JQuery stuff

User:Nickoladze/common.js - Works perfect except its stretching the image. I believe Mediawiki serves up a different URL for whatever size you want the image to be displayed (50px in this case), and I'm assigning that exact URL to the main image (100px in this case). Unsure of a way around this. Maybe we should have all the small images be 100px in wiki code, but style the table cell so the browser and not MediaWiki resizes them down to 50px on the fly? Ping me in IRC or say something on my talk page when you think about this. - Nickoladze 23:27, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, that's what I would do. --Kroocsiogsi 17:23, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

New extension bits

Take a look at User:Nickoladze/Sandbox/top5 and User:Nickoladze/Sandbox/top10 (grab my common.css again). This is what I've done, using the exact output that would come from my new extension templates and wrapping them in tables. The output from each contains some hardcoded stuff that I'm pretty sure I can't get around (the link to the page). The output kinda looks like this on both of them (the only difference between the two is the class ratingsfull or ratingsmini), repeated some number of times:

<tr><td><div class='ratingsfull'>
STAR STUFF
[[Guides:TITLE|'''TITLE''']]
</div></td></tr>

In both lists, the "0 / 5 (0 votes cast)" stuff is hidden, and votes cannot be cast. All my code changes are in a single modified file from the original extension, hopefully I can get it through Curse decently fast... This is all I can think of for now, mostly putting this here so I don't forget anything. - Nickoladze 05:21, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Oh, somehow I seemed to have made that pages at Sandbox/top5 and Sandbox/top10. I was up too late. - Nickoladze 20:04, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Loops

Hi! Your engine are support cycles? On the other wiki-projects I've seen it. If not - how difficult bring them into code? Sorry for my broken English. :D --aUSS 08:09, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

It can be installed. What do you want it for? --Kroocsiogsi 16:50, 9 May 2012 (UTC)
I wanna try to make a simple record of tables with a set of items or abilities. --aUSS 17:13, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Russian Page Whitespace

I'm not entirely sure why, but the implementation of Hero infobox wrapper on the Russian hero pages added an extra carriage return of whitespace at the top of the pages that the English pages don't have. I've found that the whitespace can be fixed by changing this code:

{{DISPLAYTITLE:Axe}}
{{Hero infobox wrapper|Axe}}

'''Axe''' — герой Силы, который...

to this:

{{DISPLAYTITLE:Axe}}{{Hero infobox wrapper|Axe}}

'''Axe''' — герой Силы, который...

If the problem is due to something in the templates then fixing it there would be better, but otherwise it would be possible to have a bot add this fix to all the /ru pages. --Pigbuster 21:31, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Hmmmmm. --Kroocsiogsi 22:26, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
Shoot. I thought I had it figured out when I found that adding an HTML comment would cause whitespace even with Template:Hero infobox:
{{DISPLAYTITLE:Axe}}
<!-- -->{{Hero infobox
...
}}

'''Axe''' — герой Силы, который...
Alas, removing an HTML comment from the beginning of Template:Hero infobox wrapper did not help. I'm not sure what causes it. A bot it is, I guess. Good catch. Do you think we can let the Russians suffer for two days? I kind of want to hold off to see if any other issues crop up. --Kroocsiogsi 23:09, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Re IRC quesiton

<kroocsiogsi> Faraday. Question for you. Why do translators frequently accidentally modify English pages? Is there some common way to accidentally end up on the English page without realizing it?

Might be worth looking out and seeing if the /xy lang sub-page redirects to the English page. It could just be a simple error of having both an english and in-progress translation of a page open at the same time, and then the translator not realising which tab he's on when he starts working on translating. Further consider that some folks translating might not be very familiar with MediaWiki and thus may not interpret any "obvious" indicators the same way we do. So I'd say it's not a difficult mistake to make; it's witnessed every now and again on the TF2 Wiki too. -RJ 21:38, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
I understand why editors don't always catch the mistake, but I'm confused why a few editors seem to make the mistake quite often. Tab confusion is possible, but I don't think that adequately explains all of it. I was thinking more along the lines of the malfunctioning redirects, or maybe there was an "edit" link in the interface that wasn't localized, or something like that. I haven't found anything suspicious, though. --Kroocsiogsi 22:59, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Hero Stats

Hi, nothing personal but I prefer the old implementation of the hero stats page over the query. You can leave everything redirecting to that new query page and I'll just use the version I created for myself. Mind reverting it? --Decency 17:57, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

No offense taken. The main reason for preferring the query version is that it always contains correct and up-to-date information for all released heroes. I thought Baloroth had applied his "new" style to the that table already, but I guess he only did it for the derived tables found at Strength etc. I have gone ahead and changed the table style to more closely match the original. If you still prefer the original static table, that's fine; I have copied it in your user page. I know that you preferred average/spread damage over min/max, and I agree with you, but I don't think the advantage merits the additional complication of adding it to the table. That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. If you have other suggestions, please implement them or let me know. --Kroocsiogsi 19:39, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Equipment listing

Take a look at User:Nickoladze/Sandbox/Equipment. Looks like SMW doesn't like doing queries nested 3 levels, since the items inside sets don't show. It also seems to be pretty slow, so I'd assume it's resource intensive. - Nickoladze 05:33, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Undying/Disruptor Response Pages

What do we need to do to get those done? User:Viperys has been making the pages by hand and is wasting his time. - Nickoladze 16:36, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

I give instructions on my user page. Terin was trying to make my Perl scripts work last night, but was having trouble, despite being competent. I wasn't able to help. I use strawberryperl (not sure what version) if that's any help. --Kroocsiogsi 16:49, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Stranges

Hello! My name is Rotomthe3rd, and I've decided to help around the wiki. I mainly want to work on the Strange page and Treasure Chests page. Basicly anything having to do with Stranges. So I had an idea of a huge overhaul of Stranges, Strange Parts, and the items that can be Strange, but I want you to see if this sounds OK. (I chose you as you had a pretty green name in the recent changes haha) So my thought was to do something similar to how the Team Fortress 2 Wiki does their Stranges. (See "Rank" Section). It is basically a box with the ranks for the different counters. We could do something similar for each different counters. (One tab for Kills, One tab for Victories, etc.) My other idea was a Strange Section on each Strange item. Once again, similar to Team Fortress 2's. (See Strange Variant Information). We could do a section for each Strange with it's Strange Part capability and maybe it's ranks if need be. Hope you think this ideas are good, and I hope to hear back from you soon! Rotomthe3rd 16:30, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Glad to have you on board, and contacting the guy with the funny looking name was a good plan. Unfortunately, I keep a healthy distance from the cosmetic items pages. Nickoladze knows more about the Chests, and I think DarkAssassin does a lot of work with cosmetic items. Maybe they would have an opinion. I'll drop notes on their talk pages. --Kroocsiogsi 22:56, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
I'm on board with doing anything to make the chest page better. I threw it together like the TF2 wiki but it's still lacking a bit. Feel free to edit it up. - Nickoladze 23:29, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Good idea of a current. I could make a current tell as shall iron it, we don't want to be similar TF2 wiki. Make will outline in Paint and I will try it to make.--DarkAssassin 06:21, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

I am enlisting your expertise to help SMW-ize the store pages and templates (Example: Template:Dota 2 Store nav). Liquipedia

Agh, sorry. Life is interfering. It's not time-critical. In a nut, we have potential for a lot of duplication of effort. A lot. We both appear to be aiming for comprehensive wikis of Dota 2 built on MediaWiki. Clearly you've taken several design cues from us, just as we have taken them from the TF Wiki and PlayDota (and indeed, in the competitive scene articles, from BW/SC2 Liquipedia). My instinct, and that of some other editors here, is that maybe you guys are better suited to handling the competitive scene, and we are better suited to handling game mechanics. If this distinction were made explicitly it might result in higher quality wikis for both of us, but we'd have to figure out tighter integration that a simple link-back on a sidebar. Other things of note are that we are both CC-BY-SA, so theoretically either of us could copy wholesale from the other. That would make it possible, for instance, if you wanted to, to copy most of our pages completely. However, that might result in drama unless it were blessed by both sides. One thing that I wonder about is if you even hope to cover the same aspects we do. Perhaps you just want a framework for heroes more similar to the Heropedia than to PlayDota. What level of subjective opinion do you plan to accept? Do you plan to cover store items? In what way do you want to distinguish yourselves from what we already do here? Do you just want to do the same thing, but under the aegis of TL.net? The Dota 2 community has already expressed optimism that we might find a way to coexist or move forward together; it seems logical. I'm sorry, I'm rambling more than Clint Eastwood at the GOP convention. I wish I had more time to structure this, but it's a bad week for me. Anything RJackson says about Dota 2 Wiki or Redefining History says about the competitive scene is probably correct. The only reason for the email was that there's a minor piece of dirty laundry that I don't want to be misinterpreted; it can wait. --Kroocsiogsi 07:13, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh okay. We will be concentrating initially on getting the pro-scene coverage to the same level as we have on our StarCraft 2 wiki, then we'll keep on pushing all avenues of improvement, including hero guides, strategy guides etc, (as well as having better pro-scene coverage). I guess how we view it is that subjectivity is unavoidable when talking strategy, but group consensus of experts is close enough to objectivity for what we want to accomplish. The thing we aim for is having sources backing any contested statement up, and having groups of people rather than single individuals going over/making strategy guides. How advanced our guides will go is limited by what our users wish to submit. We won't artificially hinder it if/when contributors start to take guides from the TeamLiquid strategy forum (for example) and adapt it to the wiki.
Unless all the information on your page is incorrect you're using CC-BY-NC-SA, which is incompatible with CC-BY-SA, which we use. So unless either Teamliquid or Curse decides to change the licensing policy, or they grant each other full use rights, I don't think mirroring is an alternative. As a side note to that we're currently rejecting any edit that we find that is a copy paste of your wiki, due to the license differences. --Salle 15:21, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, you're correct. It is CC-BY-NC-SA. --Kroocsiogsi 20:06, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Why won't it work ;_;

Why won't templates and stuff detect and display the items in the category? I noticed on some pages it won't detect an item's rarity either. Wasn't that last repair thing suppose to fix it? It's been borked for soooo long, and I'm pretty sure the community comes here to find cosmetic item lists for each hero, so... please fix ;_; ~ Lemoncream (talk) 12:32, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

Hero Difficulty

Hey Kroocsiogsi. Now that you've deleted all the community guides, what is the future of the Hero Difficulty page? I mentioned my suggestion on the Dota 2 Wiki: Discussion page, but I doubt anyone has checked it lately. The guide was originally a copy-paste of a PlayDota forum post on PigBuster's user space so he could make the info table sortable. It wasn't even intended to be a guide on the wiki until last year when he requested it to be moved out of his user space. My problem is that people are changing the page a lot lately, and everyone has their personal opinion on hero difficulty. It no longer reflects an accurate opinion of the original writer, R.B. Economy.

I vote the page either gets rolled back to a more accurate version (Version 508671), or it be removed entirely with the rest of the guides. --PimpadelicX (talk) 00:17, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Template Help

While you're here, can I get you to look at a template I created? It's for a big lore section I have planned. I don't quite understand the code, so I basically tweaked the cosmetic items infobox template until it looked like something. Could you fix any mistakes and/or pretty it up a bit? ^^ - Lemoncream (talk) 03:17, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I simplified some code. I replaced {{!}} with |. The only reason we use {{!}} is if it has to be inside another template or function, but since that's not the case in your template we can dispense with the awkward version. We can also remove a bunch of width settings if the table is to be this simple, since they're inherited in every row. Aesthetically, it seems to match the wiki, so I wouldn't change it. Looks good to me. I'm unclear exactly how or where this would be used. Maybe if you updated the demo on your talk page with something that more closely resembled the final intended use I'd have other ideas. --Kroocsiogsi (talk) 03:38, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Basically, I plan to make a page for every God, Race, Character, Language etc found in the lore, and the infobox would be on those pages. Some of the "Associated With" properties may have long lists, if that matters. I'd like to have an image in the box like the cosmetic item ones, except I want it to also display properly when there is no image, as in no placeholder image or ugly red link. If there is no image, then it should just look plain like it is now. And the image filename should be able to be anything, not standardized like the cosmetic infobox. Is this possible? - Lemoncream (talk) 03:53, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Sure. I've wired in the image logic and added an example to your sandbox. Is that what you were thinking? (Notice now we use the {{!}} doohickeys in the table row occupied by the image, since they're inside an {{#if}} thing.) --Kroocsiogsi (talk) 04:24, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Looks good, thank you. Look forward to many many lore pages in the future :3 - Lemoncream (talk) 04:28, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

So that latest hang probably happened when I made Treasure Key of the Cursed Wood. ‎The good news is that I'm hopefully cleaning things up. What's the SMW bug number, please? --Kroocsiogsi (talk) 20:41, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Kroocsiogsi, thanks for the update. And please, let others know. We try really hard to stay out of you guys way and let you do what is best for the wiki, so I dislike having rules, especially asking you not to use basic MW functionality (redirects), but the server impact is very real. I'm not a developer so I don't have the best technical explanation, so I'm going to ask one of our developers if he can step in here and help explain it. Perhaps it might help so you guys can revamp how you use SMW and get rid of the issue :D - Smokie (talk) 20:51, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Bloodseeker's Rupture

Hey Kroocsiogsi. I've been testing around with Bloodseeker's Rupture icon Rupture lately and have found it not to be HP Removal, despite what the wiki says. Now I know the 6.78 update says it changed to HP Removal, but even the in-game tooltip says Pure Damage, it just goes through magic immunity. Here is my reasoning behind this; absolute damage reduction and damage amplification spells work against Rupture, but do not work against other HP Removal spells. It cannot be HP Removal if there are any changes to the numbers, it should be a raw subtraction. So, should I follow the balance changelog and leave it as is, or change it to Pure Damage that penetrates magic immunity like the in-game tooltip says? --PimpadelicX (talk) 18:18, 27 June, 2014‎ (UTC)

I don't know. Both seem reasonable. --Kroocsiogsi (talk) 05:39, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Frontpage News Video

I noticed you updated the video on the front page as it was "new". Well the Curse YouTube channel actually has a more recent Level 1 Roshan meta analysis not included in their playlist. It was released last month and it discusses 6.81 changes. Without admin rights I cannot update it, so would you mind doing it? The link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgfrMVMU_bw. Thanks! --PimpadelicX (talk) 04:07, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Pictogram tick Done. Thanks. --Kroocsiogsi (talk) 04:41, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Single-hero cosmetic item nav/item & Naming

Hi Kroo, is there a way to define the name of the item when using this item template? Or any other way to achieve this result?

For example, I want:

Template:Single-hero cosmetic item nav/item

But instead of "Spectator Gem", I want it to say "Spectator: Alliance", or "Spectator: Na'Vi" etc, and still have it link to the Spectator Gem page.

The reason for this is so that we can use the template for gems without creating separate pages for each one, since Inscribed Gems, Spectator Gems, Autograph Runes etc are all basically the same and it would be too tedious. Thanks. - Lemoncream (talk) 04:28, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Template:Tlx can't do this. I'd prefer not to keep adding features to Template:Tlx, since it's used everywhere. I'd just make new templates. It sounds like a fairly specific set of needs. I've sketched out a framework below (view wikisource). In the actual template, say Template:Tlx, you'd want to replace "Spectator: Alliance" with {{{1|Spectator Gem}}} or somesuch, then call it with Template:Tlx. Make sense? Acceptable? --Kroocsiogsi (talk) 08:01, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Spectator: Alliance

[[Spectator GemTemplate:If lang|Spectator: Alliance]]
