"DIRETIDE GIVEN" quotation on the page
I received a message from a contributor today about the tiny edit-war about the "DIRETIDE GIVEN" quotation, see here. The contributor argued that the quotation was a little fun throwback to the events that surrounded Diretide 2013, and so they felt it should remain on the page. I personally kind of like the quote on the page, but I can understand why it was removed. I'd thus like to open a discussion about this quote and see what the wider editing community thinks about the quotation and whether it should be on the page or not. -RJ 23:46, 28 September 2014 (UTC)
I've removed the quote because I believe memes, or in-jokes don't belong on the wiki:
- They are too colloquial and thus don't fit the tone of a wiki article
- They don't exist in the actual game. They are a part of the community rather than part of the game
- They may alienate or confuse readers that don't know the origins of the phrase
While memes may be humorous, they better belong on a forum post or chat channel rather than a formal document meant to provide information to readers.
I temp-blocked the user because the change appeared as a low-effort anonymous edit to insert a joke into the wiki, during a time where we have a large volume of edits to keep up with due to 6.82. I was mistaken, and am interested to have this discussion. The wiki ultimately belongs to the community, so let's hear what everyone has to say. —LingoSalad (talk) 05:04, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
