Riki the Stealth Assassin is a melee agility hero that uses stealth in order to surprise enemies and quickly kill them. His trademark ability, Permanent Invisibility, allows him to sneak into the shadows to hide and slip by without giving himself away. This allows him to close in on the enemy and drop his devastating Smoke Screen, which cripples fighter and spellcaster alike. Blink Strike allows Riki to chase with impunity, and Backstab makes running from him even more dangerous.

Bio[edit]

Riki Riki, the Stealth Assassin
Play "There are none so stabbed as those who will not see."
Role: Pip carry.png Carry / Pip tank.png Escape
Lore: Riki was born middle child to the great dynasty of Tahlin. With an older brother groomed for the throne, and a younger brother coddled and kept, Riki, the small middle son, seemed born for the art of invisibility. It was an art he cultivated, and one which ultimately saved his life on the night that his people were betrayed and his family slaughtered. Of all the royal line, he alone escaped—small and agile, unassuming, using smoke as cover. He cut his way out of the royal grounds, using the advantage of surprise, quietly slitting the throats of one enemy warrior after another. Now free of his royal responsibilities, Riki uses his talents in service to a new trade: Stealth Assassin. He silences his enemies, sharpening his skills, hoping to one day take revenge on those who killed his family and robbed him of his birthright.
Voice: Tom Chantler (Responses)

Gameplay[edit]

Riki's invisibility is both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. On one hand, it makes him able to surprise enemies and farm with very little concern. On the other hand, without invisibility he has no real defense. He still has to watch out for revealing items such as Dust of Appearance and Gem of True Sight, as well as abilities that Silence him and prevent him from going invisible. If he stays alive and picks off lone enemies, he can quickly get out of control.

Smoke Screen provides a powerful Silence and gives enemies a high miss chance, as well as slowing them down. If targeted properly, it can hold an enemy down long enough to finish them off. However, enemies must stay in the area to be affected. A good strategy is to throw a Smoke Screen in the enemy's path, rather than where they are presently. Blink Strike is Riki's chase and escape ability. It operates like other Blink abilities, in that it allows Riki to teleport to a target quickly. However, Blink Strike must target a unit. It helps catch up with fleeing enemies, jump into fights quickly, and escape from situations by targeting allies. Blink Strike pairs well with Backstab, because it teleports Riki behind the enemy. Backstab causes any attack from behind to deal additional damage, and allows you to absolutely flatten weaker enemies. If they turn to run, Riki suddenly hits for much more. Finally, Riki's Permanent Invisibility allows him to go completely invisible after a short delay. If Riki's enemies don't have any form of detection, this lets Riki escape with ease and roam freely. If they do, Riki has to rely on his cunning and speed in order to get the drop on enemies, and get out alive.

Permanent Invisibility icon.png
Ability Affects
Passive Self
Riki fades into the shadows, becoming invisible and gaining additional health regeneration. If Riki attacks an enemy or is silenced, Riki will become visible.
Fade Delay: 8/6/4/2
Invis Health Regen: 4/5/6/7
Partially usable by illusions. Illusions do not get the hp regeneration.
Riki comes for you.

Notes:

  • Riki won't auto attack enemies while invisible.
  • Silence disables Permanent Invisibility. However, when the silence fades, Riki turns instantly invisible.
  • Riki turns instantly invisible after respawning, causing him to be not visible right after using Aegis of the Immortal icon.png Aegis of the Immortal.
  • Restores health in form of health regeneration, so it regenerates 0.4/0.5/0.6/0.7 health in 0.1 second intervals, which makes 4/5/6/7 health per second.
  • Can restore up to 240/300/360/420 health in one minute.
  • The regeneration is disabled whenever he breaks out of his invisibility, not when he is revealed.
  • Casting spells or using items does not break the invisibility.
  • The ability icon will show a cooldown whenever the invisibility is broken, to show the player when he turns invisible again.

The Stealth Assassin is not afraid to fight dirty, and specializes in attacking his opponents from behind.

Notes:

  • A unit's back is considered to be within 105 degrees from the back.
  • The sound effect plays at the start of the attack, but the damage is applied on hit.

The Stealth Assassin's agile movement makes him impossible to escape.

Notes:

  • When learning the 1st level of Blink Strike icon.png Blink Strike, Riki instantly has the 4 charges. However, leveling it up does not instantly grant the 5th or 6th charge.
  • The bonus damage is independent from Riki's attack damage and is instantly dealt to the target.
  • Teleports to the back of the target, guaranteeing an attack with Backstab icon.png Backstab if the target can be attacked.
  • Riki is ordered to attack the target if it's an enemy.
  • Can be cast on allies without damaging them.

Recommended Items[edit]

Explanation:
Starting

  • Tangos and Salves compensate for poor starting HP, allowing you to stay in the lane longer and reach level 6 sooner.
  • Slippers of Agility and three Iron Branches to increase early damage and both health and mana regeneration, while the slippers prepare for the shield and the branches set up for the wand later.

Early Game

  • A Magic Stick replaces your consumables with an alternative source of recovery, particularly if the enemy team includes heroes that rely on abilities.
  • Boots of Speed provide movement speed, allowing Riki to keep pace with fleeing heroes while Blink Strike is on cooldown
  • A Poor Man's Shield gives Riki damage block, aiding escape from attempted ganks or providing the defense to land one last hit on an almost dead opponent

Core

  • Power Treads give Riki increased attack speed as well as a further bonus to attributes.
  • The Magic Wand is an obvious upgrade from the Magic Stick and Ironwood Branches purchased earlier, freeing up inventory slots while retaining the attribute bonuses and healing ability.
  • A Diffusal Blade provides a way to weaken heroes receiving bonuses from buffs, as well as slow fleeing heroes and burn mana from casters. In a pinch, it can also counter use of a Dust of Appearance by purging himself. And using purge on an enemy under Smoke Screen will allow for a long silenced duration in which you can Backstab them or just fight them while they have an increased chance to miss.

Situational

  • Though expensive, a Butterfly provides a huge increase in both survivability and damage, as well as attack speed.
  • Sange and Yasha give great attribute bonuses, as well as an alternative slow method to save charges on, or use in place of a drained Diffusal Blade.
  • A Black King Bar allows Riki to effectively fight in teamfights and get kills against opponents that have strong disables.
  • A Basher allows Riki to cancel TPs with a lucky bash and continue to lockdown opponents once they have acquired a BKB, and upgrades into Abyssal Blade which allows for more reliable stuns.
  • Diffusal Blade is no longer an UAM, hence Eye of Skadi or Desolator are good pick ups for Riki for stronger Backstabs

Equipment[edit]

Tips[edit]

  • While Permanent Invisibility lets Riki effectively scout enemy heroes, remember that Riki scales primarily with gold and EXP. Extended periods of just following foes while invisible without acquiring kills can lead to Riki falling off in usefulness.
  • Blink Strike can target allies and enemies. Jumping to a friendly unit can be useful in case Riki needs to escape.
  • Heart of Tarrasque can be a good item for Riki; his Permanent Invisibility allows him to slip away and let the passive regenerate him without fear of interruption.
  • An early Orb of Venom will give Riki a good slow that may help with early kills. Remember that since 6.83 patch Diffusal Blade is no longer UAM so it will stack with other ones.
  • Only upgrade the Diffusal Blade when it's out of charges, as you buy the Diffusal Blade for the active primarily. This will allow for more kill potential as well as more escape (in that you can purge debuffs).
  • Manta Style gives good stats and allows Riki to remove debuffs such as Dust of Appearance without using Diffusal Blade charges.
  • Due to the nature of Permanent Invisibility, a well-organised team may be efficient with buying Sentry Wards to keep vision of you. You may want to take it upon yourself to 'de-ward' your lane if needs be; if you're without a support, or so that your support can concentrate on other items.
  • Save the early Orb of Venom and once the game reaches later stages you can upgrade to Eye of Skadi for one more reliable slow that penetrates BKB.
  • You can take Permanent Invisibility as your first skill point and easily take the first Bounty Rune in either of top or bot sides of the river,so the enemy won't have any forms to detect you.
  • Riki icon.png Riki is a key hero to catch slippery foes and heroes that are heavy reliant in their own active skills since he can approach without detection and use smoke to prevent them from using escape spells,so its wise to pick him as a counter pick to many heroes like Slark icon.png Slark,Juggernaut icon.png Juggernaut,Anti-Mage icon.png Anti-Mage,Weaver icon.png Weaver,Storm Spirit icon.png Storm Spirit, however,be careful to enemies carrying escape items, like Force Staff or Shadow Blade.
  • Be wary around more durable enemy heroes. They're much more likely to stand and fight should you engage them and therefore eliminate your advantage from Backstab.

Trivia[edit]

  • In DotA, Riki was called "Rikimaru"; Rikimaru is also the name of a main character in the Tenchu game series.[1]
  • Riki's fun/alternate name was Riki Martin, which is a pun on Ricky Martin, a famous Latino pop singer.
  • Riki's line upon dying, Play "Good assassins never die… they just fade away.'" is a reference to the General Douglas MacArthur quote, "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away."
  • Riki's line Play "There are none so stabbed as those who will not see." is a reference to "A christmas Carol" where a blind woman says, "I am not so blind as those who will not see.".
  • Riki's line Play "I speak softly, but carry a sharp knife." is likely a reference to the West African Proverb "Speak softly and carry a big stick.", popularized by U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt.
  • Riki has the highest base stat of any hero.
  • In the early versions of DotA, Witch Doctor icon.png Witch Doctor's Death Ward icon.png Death Ward was actually Riki's ultimate ability which did not require any channeling and allowed him to place the ward anywhere to attack enemies. Riki's skill set also included a regular blink ability and a critical strike instead of the current Backstab icon.png Backstab and Blink Strike icon.png Blink Strike.
