Pause is a status effect which was deprecated and never saw use in Dota 2. All spells which use the Pause effect in DotA 1 use a regular stun, or prevent the affected units from acting in Dota 2.
Pause is a status effect that completely disables afflicted units, preventing them from moving, turning, attacking, casting spells, or using, picking up, dropping, or selling items. It pauses the duration of most debuffs and prevents them from dealing damage over time during the pause (except spells based on the channeling ability Aerial Shackles, which is the base spell of Shackles, Dismember, and Fiend's Grip, or based on the channeling ability Life Drain), prevents the player from issuing the unit new orders during the pause (although after the pause ends, orders given or queued before the pause began will be carried out), and gives the affected unit the lowest priority for enemy AI. It also fully disables evasion, True Sight, damage block, and spells based on Permanent Invisibility ( Permanent Invisibility, Spin Web, Moonlight Shadow, Nature's Guise and Smoke of Deceit), Permanent Immolation ( Rot, Permanent Immolation and Permanent Immolation), Building Damage Aura ( Radiance), and Bladestorm ( Blade Fury).

Other uses of pause[]
- The Circle of Powers (a special immobile unit each player owns in the fountain area which mainly serve as a stash) has an ability ("Freeze Hero") to indefinitely pause the hero of an ally who left the game and turn it invulnerable.
- A special chat command ("-unstuck") pauses the player's hero for 60 seconds and then moves it to the player's team fountain.
