Lyralei the Windranger is a ranged intelligence hero that uses powerful abilities in conjunction with her physical attack to take down enemies. Despite being an intelligence Hero, Windranger's playstyle resembles that of an agility Hero, due in large part to her skill set. Windranger is most often played as an offlane solo due to her escape, long range harass, and farm capability; however, she is quite versatile and can be fielded as a midlaner, roamer, lane support, or even a carry, if the game calls for it. She is famous for her immense utility and versatility, and as such, she is one of the most common picks of experienced players.

[edit] Bio

Windranger Lyralei, the Windranger
Play "If at first you don't succeed, stand closer, shoot again."
Role: Pip disabler.png Disabler / Pip ganker.png Nuker / Pip roamer.png Support / Pip tank.png Escape
Lore: The western forests guard their secrets well. One of these is Lyralei, master archer of the wood, and favored godchild of the wind. Known now as Windranger, Lyralei's family was killed in a storm on the night of her birth—-their house blown down by the gale, contents scattered to the winds. Only the newborn survived among the debris field of death and destruction. In the quiet after the storm, the wind itself took notice of the lucky infant crying in the grass. The wind pitied the child and so lifted her into the sky and deposited her on a doorstep in a neighboring village. In the years that followed, the wind returned occasionally to the child’s life, watching from a distance while she honed her skills. Now, after many years of training, Windranger fires her arrows true to their targets. She moves with blinding speed, as if hastened by a wind ever at her back. With a flurry of arrows, she slaughters her enemies, having become, nearly, a force of nature herself.

[edit] Abilities

Blocked by Magic Immunity. Blocked by Linken's Sphere. Cannot be purged. Play
Shackleshot icon.png
Ability Affects
Target Unit Enemy Heroes
Shackles the target to an enemy unit or tree in a line directly behind it. If no unit or tree is present, the stun duration is reduced to 0.75.
Range: 800
Duration: 1.5/2.25/3/3.75
Cooldown 12 Mana 90/100/110/120
Blocked by Linken's Sphere. Only blocked on primary target. Can still be shackled if wielder is the secondary target of the spell.
Windranger's variety of bow skills includes an arrow with thick ropes attached to encumber any escaping target.

  • This spell can shackle two enemies together, stunning them both.
  • Can shackle the target to an enemy unit or tree at most 525/500 behind it.
  • Trees created by Nature's Prophet's Sprout spell are valid targets for shackling.
  • Shackleshot prioritizes an enemy hero over other units for the second target.
  • Search angle is 26 degrees.

Blocked by Magic Immunity. Not blocked by Linken's Sphere. Play
Powershot icon.png
Ability Affects Damage
Channeled Enemies Magical
Windranger charges her bow for up to 1 second for a single powerful shot. The arrow deals damage to enemy units and destroys trees in its path. Damage is greatest on first target, and reduces by 10% for each target it pierces thereafter. If the channeling is cancelled early, the shot will still occur but deal less damage.
Range: 1825
Damage: 120/200/280/360
Cooldown 9 Mana 90/100/110/120
During her early years of training, Lyralei learned to fire powerful arrows that cleaved even trees to reach their targets on the other side.

  • The arrow initially moves at 3000 units per second, but slowed a little each time it hits an enemy or tree.
  • If the channel is cancelled anytime after the 0.8 second mark, the spell will still do its full damage.
  • Grants temporary vision along its flight path.

Partially blocked by Magic Immunity. Not blocked by Linken's Sphere. Cannot be purged. Play
Windrun icon.png
Ability Affects
No Target Self
Increases movement speed and adds evasion from all physical attacks, while slowing movement of nearby enemies.
Bonus Movement Speed: 50%
Radius: 300
Enemy Slow: 8%/16%/24%/30%
Duration: 2.75/3.5/4.25/5
Dodge Chance: 100%
Cooldown 15 Mana 100
Partially blocked by Magic Immunity. Can apply debuff on magic immune target. Magic immunity blocks MS slow, but not remove the debuff itself.
Lyralei enchants gusts of winds to flight incoming attacks.

  • Windrun will disjoint attack projectiles that were created before it was activated.
  • The evasion is countered by True Strike.
  • The slow lasts for 2 seconds after leaving the radius.

Focus Fire
Not blocked by Magic Immunity. Blocked by Linken's Sphere. Cannot be purged. Play
Focus Fire icon.png
Ability Affects
Target Unit Enemy Heroes
Windranger channels the wind, gaining maximum attack speed on the enemy unit or structure, although with reduced attack damage. Once Windranger switches targets, the speed is lost, however the attack speed resumes when attacking the original unit or structure. Lasts 20 seconds.
Duration: 20
Damage Reduction: 50%/40%/30% (30%/15%/0%*)
Cooldown 60 (15*) Mana 75/100/125
Can be Improved by Aghanim's Scepter (* shows the improved values). Reduces cooldown and decreases damage reduction.
Lyralei's ability to bombard opponents with a flurry of arrows is unparalleled - even at the expense of accuracy.

  • Has no cast animation.
  • Can target buildings and magic immune units.
  • The damage reduction affects only Windranger's attack damage: Modifiers and item effects, such as mana burn, Maelstrom and Mini-bash still do full damage .
  • This ability gives 400 Attack Speed to Windranger, but with enough attack speed slow debuffs it is possible to make her net IAS less than 400 even with this ability active.

[edit] Recommended Items

Starting items:

  • Early consumables are essential early game due to Windranger's low health and high mana costs. Windranger heavily relies on her abilities early on.
  • Grabbing a Mantle of Intelligence provides Windranger with some passive mana regeneration and damage.

Early game:

  • A Magic Stick is helpful in sticky situations as they allow Windranger to instantly regain some HP if ganked, or provide enough mana for an additional spell.

  • Getting Phase Boots will allow Windranger to position her Shackleshot/Powershot better, allowing for an easier gank.
  • Force Staff is very efficient and versatile for positioning a Shackleshot, allowing you to force a unit in front of a tree, force a creep/unit in front of another unit, or force yourself into position.

[edit] Equipment

[edit] Tips

  • If you must solo a lane, take Windrun first. This will give you a reliable escape if you are being ganked early.
  • Power Shot should always be maxed first, as it is a very powerful nuke early. One point in both Shackle Shot and Windrun is usually sufficient. Remember that Power Shot damages invisible heroes, so if you know where they are do not hesitate to use it. Late-game, Power Shot can be used as an exploratory long-range spell.
    • Power Shot claims to do reduced damage if released early, but releasing it at 80% or more inflicts full damage.
  • Mekansm is very strong on Windranger. Consider getting it on her after your upgraded boots, provided no one else can get it at a similar time. Remember, Mekansm is better the earlier it's gotten.
  • Shackle Shot's ministun is extremely useful for interrupting channeled spells, such as Bane's and Pudge's ultimates.
  • Early-game, unless circumstances are unusual, always save enough mana to Windrun when you are in dangerous territory.
  • Due to the rework of Focus Fire, it might be useful to level it early, as it is now more useful in teamfights, allowing you to focus down the enemy carry.
  • Despite being an escape mechanism, Windrun is potentially a very powerful defensive spell, as it allows complete evasion for five seconds at level four giving you a chance to effectly trade hits with an enemy especially by using Focus Fire in conjunction.
  • Building an Aghanim's Scepter with a powerful attack modifier can shift Windranger's role from supportive chaser/nuker to that of a semi-carry, as it will allow her to scale. However, building a scepter without an attack modifier is not very useful, and Windranger can function very well with attack modifiers even without building a scepter. Build an attack modifier first, then choose whether or not to build scepter.

[edit] Trivia

  • In DotA, Windranger was known as Alleria the Windrunner. Alleria Windrunner is a character from the Warcraft universe. In the November 21, 2013 update, her name was changed to "Windranger", likely to avoid copyright issues with Blizzard.[1]
  • Windranger's current name, Lyralei, is a partial anagram of Alleria (one of the A's was replaced with the Y).
