Ability[edit | edit source]

Damage Return
Ability Affects Damage
No Target Enemies Pure
Returns any damage you take to the unit that dealt the damage. Lasts 4.5 seconds.
Damage Returned: 100%
Duration: 4.5
Cooldown 15 Mana 25
Blocked by Spell Immunity. Spell immune enemies are not damaged.

  • Interupts the owner's channeling spells upon cast.
  • Returns incoming damage after all reductions. So when damage is fully blocked, it won't return any damage.
  • Fully ignores HP removal and self-inflicted damage.
  • Returns damage back to the source. This means it won't return damage from any summons to the hero, but to the summons instead.

Tips[edit | edit source]

  • Buy it as a counter if the opposing team has high damage (crits, attack speed) and nukes and have low health points. If timed properly, some heroes can get killed just from their own damage. And even if you can't do that, it makes many heroes hesitant to attack you for 3 seconds.
  • This item is good against heroes with surprise heavy burst damage. For example, an Ursa with a blink dagger is normally hard to deal with but a quick blademail can even the odds.
  • If a hero uses an ability that does damage over time on you, use the return. For example, you can kill Bloodseeker by walking with rupture applied on you, or Tinker by staying under March of the Machines.
  • This item is good if your hero takes amplified damage (e.g. Bloodseeker, Slardar). As the more damage your hero takes the more damage blademail returns to the attacker.
  • The return is only dealt to the unit who attacks. The mines from Techies and death ward from Witch Docter are considered as a separate unit.
  • Any damage taken are returned as Pure meaning that you can heal 25 % of the damages received with an Octarine Core.
  • The item is good if your hero dives deep into enemy lines often. A perfect example of this is Clockwerk.

      • Stats: +15 Damage, +5 Armor
      • Passive: 20% melee attack damage (calculated before reductions) returned as magical damage

      • Extra Note: Since people regularly misunderstand how this works, the damage returned is reduced twice, first when you get the damage and then again when you deal it back. For example, a 300 damage nuke gets reduced by 25% because of hero resistance, then it gets dealt back as magical damage, being reduced by another 25% (or whatever magical resistance the enemy has).

  • Total cost reduced by 220 (Chainmail cost reduced from 620 to 550, and Blades of Attack cost reduced from 650 to 500)

  • Blademail recipe from 750 to 500
