The Animal Courier is an item purchasable at the Main Shop, under Consumables. It creates a small fast unit that can carry your and your allies' items to and from your base. If it dies it will respawn after 140 seconds, and the items it was carrying will be inaccessible until then. Can be upgraded to a Flying Courier.

Ability[edit | edit source]

Deploy Courier

Deploys a creature to carry items to and from your team's base.


  • Interupts the user's channeling spells upon cast.
  • The Animal Courier is not a valid target for most spells. A list of spells which affect the courier can be found below.
  • It is possible to have multiple Animal Couriers.
  • When killing a courier, the killer always gets the 150 gold bounty, while his team only gets it when no other enemy courier is dead at the time.

Courier inventory[edit | edit source]

Like a hero, the courier possesses an inventory with 6 slots. However, it has restrictions. Almost every item gets muted when in the courier's inventory, rendering all their stats and abilities disabled and unusable for the courier. Muted items are darkened out in its inventory.

The following items are not muted:

However, only a few of them that can be actually used by the courier.

  • The Animal Courier is not able to place or share Observer Ward icon.png Observer Wards and Sentry Ward icon.png Sentry Wards. Trying to do so will give the "Item is not usable by Couriers" error message.
  • The Bottle icon.png Bottle can be "used". Using it puts it on its short cooldown, but does not use up a charge and does not regenerate. This goes for using it on self or on allies with the CTRL key.
  • Along with that, the Animal Courier can neither pick up runes, nor put them in the Bottle icon.png Bottle.
  • When using Animal Courier (Radiant) icon.png Animal Courier from the courier's inventory, the new spawned courier will use the default donkey courier model.
  • It is possible to buy a Divine Rapier icon.png Divine Rapier with the Animal Courier and it can drop the Rapier. However, it cannot pick it back up again, as it cannot pick up Rapiers in general. It also cannot pick up the Aegis of the Immortal icon.png Aegis of the Immortal.

  • On both, Radiant and Dire side, the courier always walks to a spot about 400 range infront of the shop keeper, slightly to its right side.

  • Even when the secret shop on the enemy side of the map is closer, the courier still chooses the secret shop on its team's side of the map.

  • When the courier has no items in its inventory, it stands still for a split second when casting this and then continues doing what it was doing previously.

  • When the player has no items in its stash, it gives the "No Items To Retrieve From Stash" error message and does not interrupt the courier.
  • Retrieves the items from the stash when getting within 700 range of the shop keeper. When the items are retrieved, the courier stops.

  • When the courier has no items in its inventory to transfer, it stands still for a split second when casting this and then continues doing what it was doing previously.
  • After delivering the items, the courier automatically gets the Return to Base icon.png Return to Base order.

Abilities that affect couriers[edit | edit source]

A couple of spells affect the courier the same ways as they do spell immune units. Positive auras with bonus health regeneration or armor work as well. Movement speed bonuses are ignored because the animal courier is set to fixed 350:

1 The courier will be stunned, but not take damage.

2 The courier will be disabled, but not take damage.

3 The courier will be slowed, but not take damage.

4 Couriers are always under the HP threshold, and thus are always instantly killed, giving the move speed bonus. However, Culling Blade's cooldown will NOT be reset.

5 Will have an effect when primary target, but the courier will never be a valid secondary target.

  • Couriers no longer morph when they move.

  • Fixed the courier sometimes failing to deliver items if the deliver key was pressed soon after an item was purchased.

Balance changelog[edit | edit source]


  • Reduced gold cost from 120 to 100.
  • Increased stock cooldown from 7 to 120 seconds.


  • Reduced gold cost from 150 to 120.


  • Reduced Animal Courier respawn time from 180 to 140. (still 180 for Flying Couriers).


  • Reduced Animal Courier team gold bounty from 175 to 150 (still 175 for Flying Couriers).


  • Increased movement speed from 300 to 350.
  • Increased health from 45 to 75.


  • Courier no longer block neutral creeps from spawning.
  • Couriers are now slowed by 30% when they carry an empty Bottle.

  • Couriers now respawn 3 minutes after death, the items they have are inaccesible during that time.
  • Couriers now give 150 gold to each enemy player, instead of 300 only to the killer.


  • Consumable Items no longer automatically fuse with the ones owned by other players in the couriers' inventory.
    • This means that 2 players can now have the courier hold their for example Teleport Scrolls without them merging into one stack.


  • Animal Couriers now automatically upgrade to Flying Couriers when the recipe is bought.
  • Couriers can now carry Gem of True Sight, however, it has its true sight disabled on the courier.


  • Reduced gold cost from 200 to 170.
  • Added the Retrieve Items ability, which causes the courier to pick up all the hero's items within range.

  • This ability got added in the 6.32 gameplay patch, and remove in 6.32b.
  • This ability was introduce to make it possible to drop undroppable items (e.g. Divine Rapier icon.png Divine Rapier).
  • Causes the courier to stop when used, however, it does not cancel queued orders.
