Abaddon the Lord of Avernus is a melee strength Hero known as one of the most versatile characters in Dota due to his rather low mana dependence, short spell cooldowns and a large number of viable item choices. His ability to help sustain his allies and himself plus his strong tower diving capacity give him solid lane presence. Many of his abilities offer a large sum of utility, which makes him a strong support Hero. Mist Coil serves as both a single target nuke and heal that helps shift the sustainability of both allied and enemy heroes in a lane at his will, though sacrificing a portion of his own health. Aphotic Shield holds as one of the most useful abilities in the game, able to shield a target from some damage while also able to reflect said damage to a huge area. The most important aspect is how it is able to dispel many status effects such as slows and stuns. His other abilities allow him to become a mix between a semi-carry and tank. Abaddon's passive, Curse of Avernus, allows his attacks to not only slow down his enemy, but also increase the attack and movement speed of any ally attacking the same target. With his ultimate, Borrowed Time, Abaddon is able to shift all non-HP removal damage he receives into health. When not on cooldown, Borrowed Time may activate passively when his health falls under a certain threshold, even under the most dire situations. Due to his powerful spells and versatility, Abaddon is an excellent addition to any team.

Bio[edit | edit source]

Abaddon Abaddon, the Lord of Avernus
Play "The fog of war is no match for the mist of fate."
Role: Pip tank.png Durable / Pip roamer.png Support / Pip carry.png Carry
Lore: The Font of Avernus is the source of a family's strength, a crack in primal stones from which vapors of prophetic power have issued for generations. Each newborn of the cavernous House Avernus is bathed in the black mist, and by this baptism they are given an innate connection to the mystic energies of the land. They grow up believing themselves fierce protectors of their lineal traditions, the customs of the realm--but what they really are protecting is the Font itself. And the motives of the mist are unclear. When the infant Abaddon was bathed in the Font, they say something went awry. In the child's eyes there flared a light of comprehension that startled all present and set the sacerdotes to whispering. He was raised with every expectation of following the path all scions of Avernus took--to train in war, that in times of need he might lead the family's army in defense of the ancestral lands. But Abaddon was always one apart. Where others trained with weapons, he bent himself to meditation in the presence of the mist. He drank deep from the vapors that welled from the Font, learning to blend his spirit with the potency that flowed from far beneath the House; he became a creature of the black mist. There was bitterness within the House Avernus--elders and young alike accusing him of neglecting his responsibilities. But all such accusations stopped when Abaddon rode into battle, and they saw how the powers of the mist had given him mastery over life and death beyond those of any lord the House had ever known.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Mist Coil
Partially blocked by Spell Immunity. Partially blocked by Linken's Sphere. Play
Q
D
Mist Coil icon.png
Ability Affects Damage
Target Unit Units Magical
Abaddon releases a coil of deathly mist that can damage an enemy unit or heal a friendly unit at the cost of some of Abaddon's health.
Cast Time: 0.452+0.57
Cast Range: 800
Self Damage: 75/100/125/150
Target Damage or Heal: 100/150/200/250
Cooldown 5 Mana 50/60/70/80
Partially blocked by Spell Immunity. Can be cast on Spell Immune allies. Self damage is not blocked.
Partially blocked by Linken's Sphere. When blocked, Abaddon still loses health.
A mysterious vapor from the Font of Avernus now infuses the breath of Abaddon, who releases it at will.

Notes:

  • The self damage is pure damage.
  • Abaddon can deny himself with this ability.
  • Self damage can trigger Borrowed Time icon.png Borrowed Time when dropping below 400 health with it. Borrowed Time icon.png Borrowed Time also turns the self damage into a heal.
  • Damages or Heals the target before damaging Abaddon. Means if he denies himself with this and gets a kill, he does get the experience.

Aphotic Shield
Partially blocked by Spell Immunity. Not blocked by Linken's Sphere. Can be dispelled. Play
W
T
Aphotic Shield icon.png
Ability Affects Damage
Target Unit Allied units Magical
Summons dark energies around an ally unit, creating a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage before expiring. When the shield is destroyed it will burst and deal damage equal to the amount it could absorb to an area around it. Removes certain types of negative buffs and stuns on cast.
Cast Time: 0.452+0.57
Cast Range: 500
Damage Radius: 675
Max Damage: 110/140/170/200
Duration: 15
Cooldown 12/10/8/6 Mana 100/105/110/115
Partially blocked by Spell Immunity. Becoming Spell Immune does not remove the buff.
Can be dispelled. If purged, it will explode and deal damage in its radius.
The powers of the black mist rise to absorb attacks like the black mist absorbs light.

Notes:

  • Absorbs damage after all reductions. Means in conjunction with e.g. Borrowed Time icon.png Borrowed Time or Refraction icon.png Refraction, Aphotic Shield won't absorb the damage.
  • The only exception here would be Living Armor icon.png Living Armor where the shield absorbs the damage before the armor blocks it, but the armor still loses a charge.
  • A unit cannot have 2 Aphotic Shield icon.png Aphotic Shields active at the same time. Recasting it on the same unit removes the previous shield and places a new one.
  • Losing the Aphotic Shield icon.png Aphotic Shield buff will always cause it to burst and deal aoe damage, no matter how the shield was lost.
  • The area damage is independent from the amount of absorbed damage. It will always deal the full 110/140/170/200 damage.

Curse of Avernus
Not a Unique Attack Modifier. Not blocked by Spell Immunity. Not blocked by Linken's Sphere. Can be dispelled. Partially usable by illusions. Disabled by Break.

F
Curse of Avernus icon.png
Ability Affects
Passive Units
Abaddon strikes an enemy with chilling curse on each attack, causing all units who attack the slowed enemy to gain increased movement speed, along with faster attack speed, for a limited time.
Move Speed Slow: 5%/10%/15%/20%
Attack Speed Slow: 5/10/15/20
Move Speed Bonus: 15%
Attack Speed Bonus: 10/20/30/40
Slow Duration: 2.5
Bonus Duration: 4.5
Partially usable by illusions. Illusions cannot place the debuff on enemies, but they do get the buff when starting an attack.
The curse that slows an enemy, speeds an ally.

Notes:

  • On each attack, Abaddon places a debuff on the target which slows them.
  • Every unit which attack a unit which has the Curse of Avernus debuff on, gets the speed increasing buff.
  • This means it doesn't matter if Abaddon is still attacking the unit. As long as a unit has the debuff on, other units will get the speed buff upon attacking it.
  • The slowing debuff can be placed on buildings, but cannot be placed on wards or allied units.
  • The speed increasing buff is not applied on buildings and wards attacking a debuffed unit, but is applied on enemies (e.g. upon denying a debuffed ally).
  • Abaddon himself will always get the speed increasing buff, regardless of the debuff, except when the attack target is a building.

Borrowed Time
Not blocked by Spell Immunity. Cannot be dispelled. Cannot be used by illusions. Partially disabled by Break. Play
R
B
Borrowed Time icon.png
Ability Affects
No Target Self
When activated, all damage dealt to you will heal instead of harm. Most negative buffs will also be removed. If the ability is not on cooldown, it will passively activate if your hitpoints drop below 400.
Cast Time: 0+0
Radius: 0 (900*)
Passive Health Threshold: 400
Redirected Damage: 0 (35%*)
Duration: 4/5/6 (5/6/7*)
Cooldown 60/50/40
Partially disabled by Break. The passive activating when below 400 hp is disabled.
Can be Improved by Aghanim's Scepter (* shows the improved values). Increases duration. While Borrowed Time is active, 35% of all damage taken by allied heroes in a 900 radius will be redirected to you.
The most unnatural of all the gifts of the Font of Avernus, this power defies mortal understanding. What should hurt, instead heals; and what should kill gives strength anew.

Notes:

  • Interrupts Abaddon's channeling spells upon cast. Does not interrupt channeling spells when passively activated.
  • Cannot be shift-queued, but can be cast during the cast time of other spells. Can be cast while disabled, except during silence.
  • Disjoints projectiles and applies a strong dispel on Abaddon upon activating, be it manually or passively activated.
  • Activates automatically when a damage instance drops his health below 400. The damage is dealt before Borrowed Time icon.png Borrowed Time gets activated through it.
  • This means when a damage instance is higher than his current health, he dies without Borrowed Time icon.png Borrowed Time getting activated.
  • The health loss from Heartstopper Aura icon.png Heartstopper Aura does not trigger Borrowed Time icon.png Borrowed Time when reaching the threshold. However, it is treated as damage, and thus heals Abaddon.
  • Is neither passively triggered by, nor is healed by HP removal. This means it won't heal from e.g. Armlet of Mordiggian icon.png Armlet of Mordiggian, or the delayed damage from Ghostship icon.png Ghost Ship.
    • The only exception here is False Promise icon.png False Promise. Borrowed Time does turn its delayed damage into heals.
  • Negates and heals for the damage after all reductions and amplifications, except for Aphotic Shield icon.png Aphotic Shield and Living Armor icon.png Living Armor which do not reduce any damage during Borrowed Time.
  • The damage redirection granted by Aghanim's Scepter icon.png Aghanim's Scepter is an aura and thus the buff lingers for 0.5 seconds.
  • However, the healing buff on Abaddon does not linger, so the damage redirected in those 0.5 seconds are not healed, means Abaddon takes damage and can even die to that (counts as getting denied).

Recommended items[edit | edit source]

Explanation:
Starting Items:

  • Tangos help in compensating for Mist Coil's backlash damage.
  • Iron Branches gives Abaddon more attributes, sustaining use of his spammable abilities.
  • As a support Hero, buying the Animal Courier is expected as the Hero is less item-dependent than others.

Early Game:

Core Items:

  • Phase Boots is a good alternative to Tranquil Boots which give Abaddon a solid movement speed bonus for him to catch up to support troubled allies or to pin down enemies.
  • Soul Ring greatly improves the Hero's mana management issues wherever they are encountered. Be warned, however, that the damage is counted as the HP removal type, which does not trigger Aphotic Shield nor Borrowed Time.
  • Urn of Shadows vastly increases Abaddon's healing ability, as well as providing a DoT single-target ability.

Situational Items:

  • Vladmir's Offering is a solid item on Abaddon, no matter what role he takes. Take it if you or someone else on your team is having survivability issues.
  • Consider a Mekansm or Pipe of Insight if you are frequently teamfighting. When your ultimate is off cooldown, a quick burst heal or protection from single-target nukes may mean the difference between life and death.
  • Creeps summoned by Necronomicon gain bonuses from Curse of Avernus, greatly improving their utility and damage output.
  • Aghanim's Scepter extends the duration of Borrowed Time by 1 second at all levels and redirects 35% of the damage your allies take to you for the duration. You can think of the effect as an AOE overcharge damage reduction but twice as effective.
  • Scythe of Vyse provides Abbadon with a single target disable, which is highly useful in bursting down troublesome supports. The added mana regeneration allows you to further spam items and abilities.
  • Radiance synergizes well with Borrowed Time and the Abaddon's inherent survivability. The item's passive will accelerate pushes and will force enemy attention away from squishier heroes in fights in order to stop the constant burn damage.

Equipment[edit | edit source]

Tips[edit | edit source]

  • If you are playing the team's support hero it is usually wise to max Mist Coil and Aphotic Shield first before getting any points in Curse of Avernus as your first two abilities provide a lot of utility early game ranging from healing, to debuff removal, protection and even denying yourself if needed.
  • Remember that Aphotic Shield can remove stuns and slows from its target, you can use this to save your allies from many certain death situations.
  • Abaddon is a very durable hero due to his unique ultimate, Borrowed Time, however do not let this fool you into diving enemies where retreating is the better option.
  • Casting Aphotic Shield upon the same target before its duration has ended will automatically detonate the shield before reapplying another. Combining this tactic with its massive radius can help to increase your DPS in a teamfight or finish off enemies during a chase.
  • During the early game you can use Aphotic Shield on creeps that are soon to die causing any heroes who move in for the last hit to take damage. With itemization geared toward mana regeneration this can be maintained as harassment in an Abaddon's lane support tactic. Even if the target hero realizes your tactic you can still burst your Shield by attacking the creep yourself.
  • Due to his ultimate Abaddon is one of the few heroes that can dive towers even in early stages of the game. To add with his ability to chase down heroes you may also want to purchase a Mask of Madness as the extra damage taken from activating it provides more healing from Borrowed Time.
  • Most veteran players will pay attention to when Abaddon's ultimate activates and will not attack until its duration has expired, you can however heal yourself using Mist Coil during this time, or by putting yourself among enemy creeps or damage-over-time abilities that have already been cast such as Jakiro icon.png Jakiro's Macropyre. Pay attention however that your ultimate has a relatively short duration.
  • Sometimes the best way to deal with Rupture is simply to run. Though Rupture will always outlast a manually triggered Borrowed Time, you still have total control of how much distance you can cover, as well as how much health you stand to lose or gain during Bloodseeker's ultimate.
  • Since Culling Blade can kill Abaddon even through Borrowed Time you might be able to bait out the ability from an enemy Axe by manually activating your ultimate just before you hit the threshold.
  • If you are planning on playing the team carry early points in Curse of Avernus will give you much needed chasing power and increased damage output and will also apply the same to your allies. In this case it might be a good choice to max Aphotic Shield before Mist Coil because you are likely to be diving the enemy a lot which will assure that your shield will burst quickly, allowing you to repeatedly cast it on yourself. Though trying to be the carry for the team is not recommended as Abaddon has much more utility as one of the most durable support heroes in the game.
  • Curse of Avernus can have defensive uses as well, such as hitting an enemy that is chasing your ally to slow them down. You can also use this to save yourself as well under certain circumstances as hitting your target will reduce their movement speed by 20% while give you a 15% movement speed buff. That short boost of movement speed can sometimes save you or your allies.
  • The on-hit buff and debuff of Curse of Avernus applies to any target that Abaddon may hit, including your own creeps. This means that enemy creeps will gain a speed boost after attacking one of your creeps with you. If you took an early point in Curse, use this to tinker with lane equilibrium during the laning phase.
  • Note that Curse of Avernus's debuff fully stacks with unique attack modifiers. Considering this you may sometimes want to buy an Orb of Venom or Eye of Skadi which gives a combined movement speed decrease of 22% for Orb of Venom with a level 1 Curse and 75% for a Skadi with a Level 4 Curse. When playing Carry Abaddon this aids you greatly with chasing down heroes. The same can be said with a Sange and a completed Sange and Yasha that gives you both a movement speed boost and an additional slow.
  • Against less experienced players it may be possible to initiate a team fight with Abaddon by diving into the enemy and absorbing most of their spells and disables since in most cases Abaddon cannot be focused down before his ultimate. This will allow your teammates to enter the fray without the fear of being disabled themselves. This strategy is very unlikely to fool more veteran players.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Abaddon's title, Lord of Avernus, is a reference to the famous crater in Italy, which was, in ancient times, believed to be the entrance to the underworld.
  • In DotA, Abaddon's third ability was originally called "Frostmourne." It was changed in transition to Dota 2 due to copyright reasons, since Frostmourne exists as a famed weapon in the Warcraft universe. When using Curse of Avernus, Abaddon says 'The mistblade bites', which is similar to Arthas's Quote: 'Frostmourne hungers'. Similarly, his first ability was originally named "Death Coil", but was likely changed to differentiate it from the ability used by death knights in the Warcraft universe; one of his responses when using Mist Coil references the original name.
  • In the Christian Bible, Abaddon is the name of an angel who will rise from the Abyss and command an army of locusts. Abaddon in Hebrew means "Doom", which is ironic, given that Abaddon's skill set is focused on keeping his team alive.
